Ken Schmidt, Keynote Address State of the Industry w/ NAB President & CEO David Rehr
September 21, 2006 10:30AM - 11:45AM
Get Ready to Make Some Noise, Communications expert and former Harley-Davidson spokesperson Ken Schmidt will provide this years keynote address. Schmidt, who helped rejuvenate Harley-Davidson’s reputation as an American corporate icon, will tell radio executives how to build a culture that rekindles relationships with listeners while reaching out to new ones in completely untraditional ways.
Schmidt, a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations, began his career with Harley-Davidson when he was asked to restore then-struggling Harley-Davidson’s image and create demand for its motorcycles. Within a few years, Harley-Davidson became one of America’s most recognized brands, while sales of its motorcycles soared. Schmidt became director of corporate and financial communications, serving as primary spokesperson to the media and the financial communities.
Following his tenure as spokesperson, Schmidt left Harley-Davidson to take an ownership position with Chicago-based marketing firm VSA Partners. In addition to Harley-Davidson, VSA serves many other of the world’s best-known brands, including General Motors, Coca-Cola, IBM, and Campbell’s Soup. He later sold his portion of VSA to start his own business, Ken Schmidt Company.
The keynote address will follow opening remarks on the state of the industry by NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr and is slated for 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 21.

Digital Radio Measurement Workshop
September 22, 2006 9:00AM - 12:00PM
Hilton Anatole Hotel Metropolitan Ballroom
Broadcast engineers familiar with analog signal measurements are now challenged to master new techniques for evaluating their digital signals. To ensure good signal quality and minimize interference, it is necessary to make accurate measurements of Hybrid IBOC signals. In this session, David Maxson will review scalar measurement techniques with spectrum analyzers and power meters, and will provide an introduction to vector measurements of IBOC signals. He will also attempt to answer the vexing question, "Is my spectrum analyzer up to the task?"
The session will also touch upon the impact of amplifiers, filters, and antennas on AM and FM IBOC signal characteristics. David Maxson is Managing Partner of Broadcast Signal Lab and was Director of Engineering for a radio broadcasting company for many years. His IBOC Handbook, with co-author Don Lockett, will be published by Focal Press later this year. |
